One of the most widespread infections in the world
About 50% of the world’s population are infected by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), making it one of the most widespread infections in the world.
Colonizing the stomach and duodenum, it causes chronic gastritis, and is strongly linked to the development of duodenal and gastric ulcers and stomach cancer. Over 80% of individuals infected with the bacterium are asymptomatic, however.
The route of transmission is unknown, although it is known that individuals typically become infected in childhood. Infection is also more prevalent in developing countries.
Probiotics in H. pylori therapy
A lot of research is now focusing on potential alternatives to the traditional triple therapy, much due to increasing prevalence of drug resistance.
There is a considerable interest in the use of probiotics to enhance the effectiveness of antimicrobial therapy for H. pylori.
Proven efficacy with L. reuteri
The effect of Lactobacillus reuteri in H. pylori infected children and adults have been studied in a number of clinical trials. Also the effect on reduction of side-effects of eradication therapy for H. pylori has been studied with significantly improved gastrointestinal health in the L. reuteri group compared to placebo.
