Current Best Evidence The Journal of Pediatrics highlights Dr F. Savino´s two studies on infantile colic under the contents headline "Current Best Evidence": "Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 appears to be effective in reducing crying time for colic". In the second study by Dr Savino 50 exclusively breast-fed colicky infants were given either Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis or placebo for three weeks. The responders (50 % reduction in crying time compared to baseline) were significantly higher in the L. reuteri Protectis group than in the placebo group on day 7, 14 and 21. l results for 2010 In 2010 BioGaia reached a net sales of SEK 236 million, an increase of SEK 32.5 million or 16 % from the previous year. Excluding foreign exchange effects, the increase in net sales was 27 %. The operating profit was SEK 56.3 million, an improvement of SEK 8.6 or 18 %. Excluding foreign exchange effects, the operating profit increased by 51 %. – We had a very strong development during 2010 and are building value by investing further in clinical research, product development and the BioGaia brand, says Peter Rothschild, President of BioGaia.
BioGaia at medical conferences worldwide
The first Global Congress for Consensus in Pediatrics & Child Health was held on February 17-20 in Paris, France. BioGaia was silver sponsor and hosted the only satellite symposium at the congress, "Advances in Pediatrics and Child Health: The Potentials of Probiotics". About 300 people attended to listen to Prof B. Björkstén, Dr F. Savino and Dr E. Lionetti, reflecting the high interest of the role of probiotics in child health. On April 14-17 the 14th Paediatric Congress and the 3rd Asian Paediatric Otolaryngology Meeting will take place in Singapore. The title of the congress is Trends, Issues, Priorities in Paediatrics. Prof B. Björkstén and Dr L. Wah will be lecturing on the potential role of probiotics in child health in the context of the scientific programme. BioGaia will also participate with a booth at the fair.
Reduced regurgitation by L. reuteri Protectis
Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis significantly accelerated gastric emptying and ameliorated regurgitation in infants in a study performed by Dr F. Indrio and co-workers from Italy. The study included 42 infants diagnosed with non-complicated gastroesophageal reflux (GER) that were given L. reuteri
Protectis or placebo for 28 days.

A lecture tour in Saudi Arabia
![]() In the beginning of February BioGaia and Ferring Pharmaceuticals (Middle East) organised a three day lecture tour in Saudi Arabia. Dr Flavia Indrio, Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Senior Consultant Neonatologist of the University of Bari, Italy, held talks in the cities of Amman, Riyadh and Jeddah. Close to 400 Saudi physicians attended the lectures on the beneficial impact of L. reuteri Protectis on gastrontestinal function. The President of Pan Arab Society of Pediatric, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (PASPGHAN) Dr Mohamed I. El-Mouzan chaired the Riyadh symposium. – We are very satisfied with the great interest showed by the Saudi paediatricians, gastroenterologists and general practitioners that attended the lectures, says Cristián Contreras, Regional Director at BioGaia.
