Chewing gum in Swedish pharmacies

BioGaia probiotic chewing gum with Lactobacillus reuteri is now sold through the Swedish pharmacies. "This is one of the biggest news in oral hygiene since we started to use fluoride", says Rickard Klemming, a Swedish dentist for 36 years. The brand name for the product is GUM PerioBalance and is sold by Sunstar, one of the world's largest companies in the area of oral health. The company has a global turnover on more than 1 billion dollars per year and has 3500 employees worldwide.

Reuteri suppressed H. pylori infection

Helicobacter pylori infects the stomach and may cause peptic ulcers and gastritis. Lactobacillus reuteri was effective in suppressing the infection and decreasing the occurrence of dyspeptic symptoms. This was shown in a double-blind placebo-controlled pilot study on 40 H. pylori-positive subjects that were given L. reuteri once a day for 4 weeks or placebo. None of the patients totally got rid of the infection. The study was performed by Dr R. Francavilla and co-workers and is now published in the journal Helicobacter.

Infants' microbiota related to eczema

"We found a relation between the diversity of 1-week-old infants´ microbiota and their health status at 18 months of age with regard to atopic eczema" says Dr Mei Wang and co-workers, Sweden. Fifteen of the 35 infants in the study were diagnosed with atopic eczema and they had reduced diversity in their early fecal microbiota compared to the healthy infants. "Sufficient diversity in the fecal microbiota at early age might be an important factor for the prevention of development of atopic eczema."

Symposium about clinical experience with L. reuteri

BioGaia's net sales amounted to SEK 106.6 million for 2007, an increase of 19.8 million (23%) compared to last year. Sales in Europe rose by 67% mainly due to higher sales of tablets and drops in Italy and Finland and oral health products in Spain, Italy, Germany and France. The operating profit was SEK 8.9 million, an improvement of SEK 7.2 million compared to last year.
