Successful collaboration with Ferring

BioGaia's Probiotic products will be found in a large number of new markets thanks to an extended agreement with Ferring. The agreement gives Ferring exclusive rights to sell the drops in Australia, New Zealand and Israel as well as tablets in Brazil, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Jordan, Canada, Lebanon, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Syria. Ferring has already launched the drops in Spain, Portugal, The Czech Republic and Canada and it is expected that they will be launched in Jordan and Mexico during the first quarter this year.

Effects in mother transferred to baby

Supplementation with Lactobacillus reuteri during late pregnancy may affect the immunological composition of the breast milk. In a study on 109 mothers, Ass. Professor Malin Bottcher et al found that TGF-beta2 was reduced in breast milk after supplementation with L. reuteri. Low levels of this immune component are associated with less sensitization and possibly IgE-associated eczema i.e. infant eczema with hyper reactivity to allergy-causing substances such as egg and milk.

Convincing evidence for prevention of eczema

"A prenatal and postnatal regimen of probiotics is an effective option for pregnant women with risk factors for atopic disease to help prevent persistent pediatric atopic dermatitis in their children." Says the authors to the review article in the latest Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Data from 6 published clinical trials, Abrahamsson et al study on L. reuteri (2007) among these, were pooled and analysed.

BioGaia's net sales amounted to SEK 106.6 million for 2007, an increase of 19.8 million (23%) compared to last year. Sales in Europe rose by 67% mainly due to higher sales of tablets and drops in Italy and Finland and oral health products in Spain, Italy, Germany and France. The operating profit was SEK 8.9 million, an improvement of SEK 7.2 million compared to last year.
