Did you know that fermented foods contain live bacteria that help keep your gut microbiome healthy? The fermentation process also produces new nutrients that benefit you beyond gut health and digestion, such as supporting a strong immune system.
Recipe: honey-fermented strawberries
INGREDIENTS
1 ½ pints of fresh strawberries
¼ cup of honey
¼ cup of liquid whey (a byproduct from dairy production that you can buy or make at home)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Use fresh strawberries and start by removing the green tops. Then cut the berries into quarters.
- Place them in a clean jar, leaving some space at the top.
- Mash the strawberries with a wooden spoon, then add the honey and whey.
- Close the lid and leave the jar at room temperature for three to five days. Be sure to stir it twice a day.
- Once you see bubbles, taste it to see if it’s to your liking. For a stronger flavor, leave the jar on the counter for longer.
